The Return of the King: Book VI, Chapter VII: Homeward Bound

Gandalf and the Hobbits finally reach Bree after a long but uneventful journey. There they find Butterbur largely unchanged… but the news is that things just aren’t quite right in this part of Middle-earth. The companions don’t stay long; they’re anxious to return to The Shire and get to the bottom of things. Frodo also realises that, regardless, The Shire will never again be the same for him.

Informing the hobbits that they have the capacity and wisdom to settle The Shire’s affairs themselves, Gandalf leaves to catch up with Bombadil,and the company is reduced to four Hobbits that set out from the Shire more than 12 months ago.

“It seems almost like a dream that has slowly faded.” Merry says. “Not to me,” Frodo answers “it feels more like falling asleep again.”

How long do your topic chats go for?

Our chats usually last from an hour to ninety minutes, and are very newbie friendly. Simply drop in and join the conversation! However, our main room, #theonering.net is open 24 hours a day. We don’t always talk Tolkien there, but if you have a burning question, you’ll usually find one or two of “the regulars” up for a chat!

Where — connection details

Chat happens on #thehalloffire on irc.theonering.net — the TORn IRC server. It is based on internet relay chat technology (that means it’s hella old skool). It’s a text-only, moderated chat room full of eccentric Tolkien fans. We’re open 24/7 (although some times are busier and more active than others).

There are many ways to connect to the chat server. However, the easiest is generally to use a browser-based client. We usually direct folks to Mibbit:

If you’re more oldschool or technically adept, you can install one of the scores of standalone chat clients that available for desktop and mobile devices. Just plug in our server details (see bottom) into the client and connect.

Enhanced Editions Note
The Enhanced Editions are actively supported games. Please note that every patch update will wipe your current mod setup! If in the middle of a modded game you might want to delay the patch update (if possible) as even after reinstalling the mods, you might not be able to continue with your old savegames. Alternatively, copy the whole game's folder into a new one that can be modded and will stay untouched by game patches. For BG2:EE it is important that you install the mod to the language version you are playing the game in. Otherwise, the dialogues of the mod will not show but give error messages.

Windows
Crossmod Banter Pack for Windows is distributed as a self-extracting archive and includes a WeiDU installer. To install, simply double-click the archive and follow the instructions on screen.

Alternatively, the files can be extracted into your game directory using 7zip or WinRAR. When properly extracted, your game directory will contain setup-crossmodbg2.exe and the folder crossmodbg2. To install, double-click setup-crossmodbg2.exe and follow the instructions on screen.

You can run setup-crossmodbg2.exe in your game folder to reinstall, uninstall or otherwise change components.

Mac OS X
Crossmod Banter Pack for Mac OS X is distributed as a compressed tarball and includes a WeiDU installer.

First, extract the files from the tarball into your game directory. When properly extracted, your game directory will contain setup-crossmodbg2, setup-crossmodbg2.command, and the folder crossmodbg2. To install, double-click setup-crossmodbg2.command and follow the instructions on screen.

You can run setup-crossmodbg2.command in your game folder to reinstall, uninstall or otherwise change components.

Linux
Crossmod Banter Pack for Linux is distributed as a compressed tarball and does not include a WeiDU installer.

Extract the contents of the mod to the folder of the game you wish to modify.

Download the latest version of WeiDU for Linux from WeiDU.org and copy WeiDU and WeInstall to /usr/bin. Following that, open a terminal, cd to your game installation directory, run tolower and answer Y to both queries. You can avoid running the second option (linux.ini) if you've already ran it once in the same directory. To save time, the archive is already tolowered, so there's no need to run the first option (lowercasing file names) either if you've extracted only this mod since the last time you lowercased file names. If you're unsure, running tolower and choosing both options is the safe bet.

To install, run WeInstall crossmodbg2 in your game folder. Then run wine BGMain.exe and start playing.

In addition to the methods above for removing individual components, you can completely uninstall the mod using setup-crossmodbg2 --uninstall at the command line to remove all components without wading through prompts. .
