If you're using macOS Catalina or later:

  1. Hover your pointer over the full-screen button in the upper-left corner of a window. Or click and hold the button.
  2. Choose ”Tile Window to Left of Screen” or ”Tile Window to Right of Screen” from the menu. The window then fills that side of the screen.
  3. Then click a window on the other side of the screen to begin using both windows side by side.

Hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds to fully shutdown your Mac. Disconnect all external devices such as USB drives, printers, docks, etc. If you’re not using a Macbook, you can keep your keyboard and mouse plugged in. Now power on your Mac and if it starts successfully then it is one of your peripheral devices.

If your Mac is stuck on the Apple logo or you see a progress bar but there is no actual progress, try resetting the NVRAM. This reset usually fixes the problem. To use it, turn off the computer and immediately start it while holding option, command, P, and R buttons. Once it started to release the buttons. I erased/reformatted—Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID partition map—my mid-2010 MacBook Core 2 Duo and attempted to install Sierra with a USB drive—containing the file InstallOS.pkg—starting up holding down the Option key. “Internet Recovery” screen is displayed. Shut down your Mac. Power your Mac back up. Immediately press and hold these four keys: Option + Command + P + R. Make sure to hold the keys for at least 20 seconds.

If you're using macOS Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan:

  1. Click and hold the full-screen button in the upper-left corner of a window.
  2. As you hold the button, the window shrinks and you can drag it to the left or right side of the screen.
  3. Release the button, then click a window on the other side of the screen to begin using both windows side by side.

If you can’t enter Split View

If Split View doesn't work, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Mission Control, and make sure that “Displays have separate Spaces” is selected.

Work in Split View

In Split View, you can use both apps side by side, without the distraction of other apps.

  • Choose a window to work in by clicking anywhere in that window.
  • Show the menu bar by moving the pointer to the top of the screen.
  • Swap window positions by dragging a window to the other side.
  • Adjust window width by dragging the vertical line between the windows.
  • Switch to other apps or your desktop with Mission Control, or use a Multi-Touch gesture such as swiping left or right with four fingers on your trackpad.

Exit Split View

  1. Move the pointer to the top of the screen to reveal the window buttons.
  2. Click the full-screen button in either window. That window exits Split View.
  3. The other window switches to full-screen view. You can switch to the full-screen window with Mission Control, or use a Multi-Touch gesture such as swiping left or right with four fingers on your trackpad.

About a week ago, my macbook pro (mid 2011) started acting up. The first thing it did was completely shut off, not being able to be powered on at all. When I plugged the magsafe adapter into the computer all that would happen was the light on the charger would glow an extremely dim green and flicker yellow at times. This has happened to me before once and the past time I just let it sit and it turned on in a couple days. I let it sit just like I did the previous time and, voila it turned on. I was able to get about a days use out of it before I booted it up and noticed it took me straight to recovery mode. This has also happened to me once before and what I did to fix it was start it in safe mode, however this time is different. When I try booting to safe mode it shows me a

grey `no entry`sign and sends me back to recovery mode. On the OS X utilities screen I tried re-installing a new version of mavericks however it wouldn't verify my mac to download a new version. Turns out when my computer didn't turn on the previous days the clock stopped working and that's why I couldn't get a new copy of mavericks. I adjusted the clock in terminal and it now lets my through to pick a drive where I want to re-install mavericks on. The only available drive is called recovery HD and it is greyed out. When I hover over it, it says that the disk is locked, and I have no idea how to open it. Next I tried using a startup disk to go straight back to my original hard drive but it syas that there are no start up hard drives to choose from. Lastly I went to disk utility and tried to verify and repair all my disks. When I verify my main disk (320gb hitachi) it says everything is ok, but when I try to repair it, it says `live file system repair is not supported.` I have no idea what my next step is in order to get my mac working and out of recovery mode. Any help is appreciated and sorry about the long post, I just wanted to cram all the info I had in.

additional information: I have made no backups what so ever and I cant find any way of making backups while in recovery mode.

I am too nervous to mess with the partitions so if someone could help with those it would be great!
